PROGRAMS
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
The After School Program serves approximately 30 elementary students each school year with a holistic approach to ministry. We serve their spiritual development through Bible lessons and prayer, their mental development through homework help and partnering with the Library for STEAM lessons. We serve their physical development through organized and free play as well as a balance of healthy and fun snacks. We serve their relational development through mentoring and helping them develop healthy friendships with other students.
FOOD PANTRY
The Food Pantry serves an average of 100 households per week throughout the year with fresh and non-perishable food items. Through our partnership with local restaurants and a grocery store, we have the privilege of providing fresh meat and produce each week along with bakery items to go with the usual non-perishable items. During check in participants are asked for prayer requests that staff and volunteers pray for each week. We have also been able to start offering pastoral counseling and prayer support provided by Blue Ridge Christian Counseling to our participants. Due to Covid-19, the Food Pantry is currently operating as a curbside service. Our Food Pantry is currently open on Wednesdays, 11:00am until 1:00pm. Call us at 540-343-5437 for more questions or to sign-up.
REFUGEE HOUSING
We have an apartment upstairs in the Friendship House that we use for housing refugees who have entered our country through the Refugee Resettlement Program. Another local agency handles the intake and paperwork for the government program, which allows us to focus on providing a safe place while the family finds work and permanent housing. We have had the privilege of hosting families from Nepal to the Middle East, including a translator who was in danger for helping our troops.
SEASONAL PROGRAMS
The Friendship House doesn’t just meet during the school year! We have seasonal programs for our after school program participants. These include summer reading programs in partnership with the library, field trips (such as swimming, hiking and fishing to name a few) and weekly open house times where the kids can come play and hang out in a safe place for the afternoon.
In addition to this, we also serve families during the holidays with Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas food baskets, as well as our annual Christmas Toy Store. Through our Christmas Toy Store, parents can come buy new items at a deeply discounted price for their children.
